A representation of neurodiversity at a tech conference by DALLE

Over the past year I have been fortunate enough to be able to speak at a variety of different tech events about neurodiversity. One of the thing I’ve always prioritised as part of my talks is sharing insights on how we can make tech meetups and conferences more inclusive for neurodivergent individuals. After my talk, I often had the opportunity to speak with people about their personal challenges at such events, which helped shape and refine my talks.

As I prepared for my presentation at Devsum, I realised it was about time to put these thoughts into writing. So here we are, breaking down this post into actionable sections tailored for attendees, event organisers, and speakers alike. Let’s dive in and explore how we can improve the tech event scene into a more welcoming place for everyone.

Attendees

As an attendee of a tech event you have an important role in helping everyone (including yourself) feel both safe and included.

Lets start with considering how we should be giving people space. While it might be tempting if you see someone alone to start a conversation, introduce yourself, you don’t want them to feel left out, be mindful they might be taking a quiet moment for themselves.
